How To Recognise Your Best Use

I was struggling to put finishing touches to something I had been contracted to do when my phone rang.  I took the call but the caller who incidentally is my Coach could tell that I was distracted.  I was speaking to her on the phone but even in that distance she could tell I wasn’t fully present.  After about five minutes she asked me; “Is this a bad time? I can call later, because you are not responding to me.”  I apologized and told her that indeed I was distracted because I was rushing to meet up a deadline on a contract I had to deliver on within the hour.  She said she understood and hung up.

Weeks later, we were face to face, and out of the blue, in one of the rare times we shared a one on one together on that trip, she recalled that telephone conversation and asked me “So tell me, that particular contract, is it your best use?” Wow!  That one got me, and was an answer to the questions a lot of people have asked me over the past few years.

Most people are confused as to what God has called them to do, or the reason why they are on earth and it is not because they are bereft of gifts and skills. Rather it is because they are good at so many things that it becomes almost impossible to settle on what they should really be doing.  Perhaps you fall in this category; Well, thinking through the question “is that your best use?” did help me and I hope it helps you too.

First what does the question “Is this your best use?” mean? My Coach wanted to know if that particular task I was doing that day was my best I could do.  Now the thing is I am very good at this task, I am really good at it!  So initially I felt since I am good at this, shouldn’t I find a way to convert it to income amongst all the other things I do?
However, the more I thought about it, the more the quotation by Tim Redmond comes to mind “There are many things that will catch my eye but there are only a few things that will catch my heart.”  When you chose to be the best and most impactful you in a particular field the first thing you must know is that it is not because this is the only thing you can do well.  It is just that on the scale of preference, priority and impact that which you choose carries more weight, both in value and reward.

So how do you recognise your best use? By asking and answering the following questions:
1.      Is this a taught or acquired skill or is it a gift bestowed?
2.      How many other people within your circle or team can do this at least 80% as well as you can?
3.      Honestly can you keep doing this even if you are not paid for it? What are you willing to sacrifice to continue to be used in this way?
4.      Is the time you spend on this use commensurate with the reward?  To answer this question, please note that it is critical to define what a reward looks like to you.
5.      Do you look forward to retiring from being used like this, or is this your lifework?
6.      How many other people are blessed with this use, besides you?
7.      Does this blessing endure or is it temporal?
8.      Whose life gets better, really better because you did this?
9.      What is the worst that can happen should you not be used in this way?

Well for me by the time I got to question four, I recognized quickly that indeed that was not my best use.  The question now is, am I discarding that use totally?  No I am not; I chose to only use it for those who I really love as an act of service and love rather than a tool to earn an income.  I believe that if I focus on my best use, amongst which is serving you on this blog, I will make more impact and ultimately more reward.

Charles Colson: Course Redirection

"What we do flows from who we are". Charles Colson

Another week, another opportunity to live the dream life.  Welcome to NeverTheLess your get better page.

I awoke yesterday to the news of the death of Mr. Charles Colson, the Presidential Aide to President Richard Nixon when the Watergate scandal broke.

The truth is we cannot talk about Charles 'Chuck' Colson without mentioning the Watergate Scandal and the fact that he actually went to Prison because of Watergate. So for the first forty one (41) years of his life all that he ended up with was a prison sentence.  This had to be one of the lowest points of his life. If anything happened that was lower, I am not aware.

Before he was indicted and sent off to Prison however, Colson had met someone who just got converted to Christianity and was very excited to share both his new life and new learning with Mr. Colson. So at over 41 years of age, Charles Colson came face to face with the reality of the depraved life he had lived till that point.  So he also converted to Christianity and from that point his life took on new meaning and he started to see how he could redirect the course of his life and leave a worthy legacy in the end.

While this is not a post on the case for Christianity, it is a call for us all to reexamine our lives and see if how we have lived or are living will leave the right legacy.

How does Mr. Colson's story affect your pursuit of a dream? First, someone pointed to him what was wrong with his life, and he listened.  He saw for the first time that his life was full of pride and unfortunately, headed nowhere.

Upon this discovery he repented and converted to the Christian faith, he became what today is called an evangelical and began to study everything he could find on the faith, especially the Bible.  By the time he was granted probation after months in prison, Mr. Colson had come to the realization that life wasn't worth much if it was lived selfishly. He had found Purpose!

He started a ministry to care for prisoners and ex prison inmates, something he continued to do for many years.  Colson died yesterday at 80 years of age and we can learn the following from him:

1. We can redirect our course irrespective of how long we have either worked the wrong dream or failed because of character defects.

2.  There is always someone who can point to us both our folly and what we should do about it (remember our posts on mentoring).

3.  If we listen to our Mentor and submit ourselves we most likely will be able to find a way to live our lives again, with dignity.  We should be open to learning new things.

4.  We must be able to find a way to ensure that our Purpose serves others, not just ourselves; remember that is the point of living a dream.

In conclusion, Mr. Colson lived 80 years in all, the first 41 lived in duplicity and a lack of moral compass which culminated at Watergate.  He lived another 39 years, where he redirected the course of his life and made so much impact that we are talking about him today.

It therefore does not matter how low your life or dreams may have sunk, maybe all you require is a simple course redirection; you will make it NeverTheLess.  If Charles Colson made it, you can too!  Remember that a dream is only one if it is acted upon.  Till next week, God bless you.

WHY?

NEVERTHELESS: WHY?

Happy New Year!

I pray that this New Year will bring you all the greatness that you aspire and work for in Jesus’ name.  I have been MIA for a while on this page, I know, and I am very sorry.  But I had to do something right.

I had to take time out to be with my family and I had to create memories for us.  So even though I went off with the laptop, they did see to it that I didn’t get close enough to it, to be able to do my thing on this page!

But I am back now, and ready to go.

Are you ready?

Now, because it is a brand new year I know a lot of us want to do better than we did last year. We are hoping and planning to make a few changes that will give us a better year ahead.

But I have something on my mind, and it is a question that has refused to leave me no matter how hard I try.  A Simple three letter word. WHY.

Why do you want your life to change?
Why is a change of job important?
Why do you want to get married?
Why do you want to move house?
Why do you want to lose weight?
Why? Why? Why?

When I have the opportunity to speak to people at my coaching and teaching sessions, I find that so many people want to change jobs for more money; people want to marry because others have gotten married or they are old enough to do so. Others want to move house to change neighbourhoods, so that they can keep up with the Joneses.

Great reasons, but is this really why you make all the plans you make?  To make more money, do what others are doing…?

The reason answering the WHY question will make or break us this year, is because life is moving from a place of individual relevance to a place of eternal relevance.

Answering the WHY question brings you to the place of finding out what you are on earth for, and knowing this can set you on a course that will alter your entire existence positively!

Before you take that job, buy the wedding dress and pay for that house, please pause and ask yourself WHY?

Till next time when I come your way remember that your purpose will determine if you have lived or existed, and WHY will help you find out what your purpose is.

It doesn’t matter how far away you have strayed; remember that you can still make it, NEVERTHELESS.

Love
